New Delhi: The central government on Thursday announced restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, PCs and servers.
A statement from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on Thursday said that though import of these items will be allowed against a licence , but certain use cases are not restricted.
This involves importing laptops, tablets, PCs or ultra-small computers via online portals, courier or post.
Goods imported under the baggage regulations are also exempt from these restrictions, according to DGFT's announcement.
About 20 products in each consignment are exempt from import licenses for purposes such as research and development, testing, benchmarking and evaluation, repair and re-export, and product development.
Certain imports are permitted on the condition that the imported goods are used only for stated purposes and not for sale.
Further, after the intended purpose, the products would either be destroyed beyond use or re-exported, the notification said further.
However, imports are allowed if these electronics are an "essential" part of capital goods.
