Gangtok Continuous heavy rains in Northeast India have wreaked havoc in Sikkim. Heavy debris fell on an army camp due to heavy rains and landslides in Chhaten area, due to which three soldiers have died and six soldiers are missing so far.
Defense officials said that three bodies have been recovered from the spot, while four soldiers have been evacuated safely with minor injuries. Army and administration teams are conducting round-the-clock operations to search for the missing soldiers.
Red alert in Mangan district, Teesta river in spate
The state government has issued a red alert in Mangan district in view of the seriousness of the situation. The water level of the Teesta river has reached dangerous levels, due to which there is a threat of floods in many nearby areas.
Traffic halted, tourists warned
Due to heavy rains, landslides have occurred at many places, due to which traffic on the roads has been completely disrupted. Mangan SP Sonam Dechu Bhutia has advised tourists to stay in hotels for the time being.
Rescue of tourists stranded in Lachung continues.
The work of evacuating tourists stranded in Lachung area is going on with the help of police, forest department and Lachung Hotel Association. Earlier, 32 people have died due to floods in Sikkim and dozens are still missing.
The state and central government are in alert mode and
NDRF and army teams are engaged in speeding up rescue operations. The state government has sought additional help from the center. Local people have also been appealed to be cautious and stay away from rumors.
